ABOUT CHESTERTOWN

Separated from western Maryland by the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore shares a peninsula with Delaware and Virginia (aka Delmarva). Delamarva’s Chestertown is the most happening place in Kent County, Maryland. It’s very time warp, middle of nowhere, flat, and sleepy. Big stretches of ag land have the mega-developers drooling (to the disgust of pro-green/pro-community folks). There’s a liberal arts college and an improbably high number of churches given that this is Maryland’s smallest county. Brick lovers dig the sidewalks and the historic houses, many built by the profits of the slave trade. It’s still stubbornly segregated.

Chestertown appeals to history buffs and retirees. There’s lots of talk about it being a growing bedroom community for commuters who work in big cities, but I’ve only met two such people so I think that’s mostly a rural legend. Tourism began dwindling a couple summers ago and continues to slide.
