CHESTERTOWN’S “DESPERATE DINERS”

In our last episode, Reiley’s on the River, the only dining spot within walking distance of downtown to offer a river view, locked its doors for good. While none wept for the loss of a decent sandwich at a brow-raising price, the demise of a restaurant that boasted about serving seafood with a dash of “foolishness” (I’m not making that up–it was on the menu) wasn’t a shocker. Some folks in Chestertown mourn the closure of this house of booze with a view, some chalk it up as another Roy Kirby debacle. RUMOR CENTRAL reports that two nights ago, Mr. Kirby entered Andy’s and was greeted by what one witness describes as a chorus of boos. Nota bene: he’s a native of Baltimore (strike one); owns a construction company and an ever-expanding collection of local real estate (strike two); and has been seen tooling around town in various vehicles, including a Bentley and a Hummer (strike three). It seems that some members of the local bar crowd aren’t fans of the man’s foray into the dining scene. Next installment: a mysterious caterer with rave reviews arrives to resurrect local eatery.
